At Choose Joy Dance Center, we believe dance should be filled with purpose, passion, and—most of all—joy. Built on a legacy of love and a desire to create a welcoming space for every dancer, our studio is more than just a place to train—it’s a place to belong.
Led by owner and director Cortney Hickman, Choose Joy is grounded in Cortney’s years of experience in many different areas of the dance world, a deep love for the art of dance, and a heart for helping kids grow both on and off the dance floor. Cortney has taught at some of the top studios in Minnesota, choreographed award-winning routines, and worked alongside nationally recognized programs—bringing that knowledge and energy into every class.
We offer recreational classes and competitive teams for dancers ages 2–13, focusing on strong technique, creative expression, and building confidence. Whether it’s tap, jazz, lyrical, ballet, hip hop, or contemporary, our goal is to give dancers a solid foundation while helping them discover what makes them shine.
More than anything, we want our dancers to feel safe, seen, and inspired every time they step through our doors. Because at Choose Joy, it’s not just about dance—it’s about community, growth, and finding the joy in every step.
The heart behind: “Choose Joy”
Choose Joy Dance Center was born from a lifelong dream—a dream director Cortney Hickman carried in her heart since she was a tiny dancer. She imagined a space filled with energy, encouragement, and genuine love. A place where kids felt safe to be themselves, supported in their growth, and filled with excitement every time they came to dance. From the very beginning, one of the greatest believers in that dream was her mom.
Her mom, Karie Hickman was always there—through rehearsals, auditions, competitions, and countless moments in between. No matter what the day held, she had one piece of advice that never changed: “Choose Joy.” It wasn’t just something she said; it was how she lived. Even after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, she continued to lead with light, grace, and joy—choosing to see beauty in even the hardest moments.
She passed away in September of 2023, but her presence continues to shine through every part of the studio. Choose Joy isn’t just a name—it’s a promise. A legacy, Karie’s legacy. A daily reminder to find light in the dark, to support one another with love, and to dance through life with joy.
Through this studio, Cortney honors her mother’s spirit by creating a space where dancers feel seen, valued, and inspired. Choose Joy Dance Center is more than just a studio—it’s a community where confidence grows, friendships form, and joy leads the way.
